Municipal Property Sale?

In the Hampshire Gazette's most recent weekend edition (1/26-27), I came across a letter to the editor by Walter P. Niemiec in which he writes of a transfer of former municipal property to a private developer. The letter states that the property contains former water works buildings, and includes land "right next to the Manhan River dam, and a scenic pleasure". I am currently seeking more info on this transaction, and hope to follow up on this soon.

This one's been in the news quite a bit over the past few days -- apparently there was a pretty heated meeting about it on Tuesday night, with developer David Boyle and John Bator of the Pascommuck trust squaring off.

Believe the purchase price, a few years ago, was $120,000, give or take.

Anyway -- this is an interesting one to follow, as it's pitting open space proponents against developers. Thing is, Boyle's plan is the type of development I, personally, would like to see more of -- re-using the city's existing infrastructure to increase residential density within walking distance of downtown (and, in this case, both downtown and Eastworks).

Keep the blogging going!
